Bridging Educational Gaps for Vulnerable Children in Remote Ethiopia

To improve access and quality education for disadvantaged and vulnerable children in remote locations of Ethiopia OWS DF has undertaken massive activities related to Education. In its early days of establishment, the organization constructed several primary and secondary schools in different parts of the Somali region. Notably, OWS DF had a key role in developing the 1st curriculum of the Somali Regional State. In the recent past, in the SNNPR region, to improve access to crisis-sensitive learning for conflict-affected out-of-school children in Konso OWS DF, in partnership with OCHA and IOM/RRF, OWS DF intervened through the provision of EiE responses. In targeted 13 schools and three woredas, OWS DF has undertaken the construction of temporary learning spaces, rehabilitation of partially damaged infrastructures, furnishing, construction of gender-segregated dry pit latrines, water schemes, hand washing facilities & and sanitation & and hygiene promotion.

In addition to providing educational materials to affected children, OWS DF supplied learning materials to targeted schools. To enhance children’s readiness and retention Accelerated Learning Program is provided; otherwise, the children will be at risk of exclusion from formal education. The response also integrated protection activities, including MHPSS support, awareness of risk factors, referral pathways & and PSEA activities.

Furthermore, OWS DF, with the financial support earned from DFID, implemented a project to improve the quality of education, thereby enhancing children’s literacy and numeracy in the least performing 20 schools located in the Somali region. The project focuses on improving community engagement, teachers’ capacity, inclusion, and school leaders’ continuous professional development to achieve better learning outcomes.

With the EiE and education quality improvement programmes OWS DF has reached more than 245,000 vulnerable and out-of-school children in Somali and SNNPR regions.
